Blogging is tough.
But hey, there are Nigerians who are winning in it and leading the way.
I call these Nigerian bloggers outstanding bloggers.
The problem we have in the Nigerian blogging world is copycats.
Almost everyone wants to be the next LindaIkeji.
They are just copying and pasting and sadly, those bloggers need to get back to the drawing board.
In this list, updated for 2014, I have reached out to those great young folks who are daring niches other than Nigerian news and gossips.
What I have used to measure their outstanding-ness are:
- Alexa Rank
- Facebook and Twitter Followers
- Blog comments
- Feed Subscribers
I’m sure you’ll agree with me that these bloggers deserve to be applauded and encouraged.
Learn from them and if you need help getting into the blogging world, read this
In this article, I have excluded newspaper owned blogs, like Punch, Guardian, Sahara Reporters, The Sun, etc. These are not bloggers, they are media houses doing media business. Our focus is on individuals who are actually making serious impact on the blogosphere, irrespective of limited resources and competition.
Don’t get offended if your blog is not listed at the moment.
If you don’t find your blog here, it doesn’t mean you are not serious, it just means you have to work harder or that you just need to let me know.
1. LINDAIKEJI.com. Niche: Gossip/Entertainment
If you doubt it, ask Linda Ikeji, owner of the mostly controversial gossip/ entertainment blog, lindaikeji.blogspot.com.
From a very meager start, Linda Ikeji’s blog has grown to be a reference point in Nigeria, to the extent that Telecom operators now offer news alert from Linda Ikeji for a set fee.
In one of her interviews that I read, she said she was blogging mainly because she loved it, not because of the money. It is fair to say that the keys to Linda’s success in blogging are: passion in what she does, being among the first to pioneer a niche and consistency.
I am still wondering why she has not acquired the domain name: lindaikeji.com as that would better brand her. I heard the guy who registered the domain is asking for almost a 1M Naira (about $6,600). I dont think that is too much considering the fact that Linda could be making as much as $10,000 monthly from her blog. The platform, blogspot, is not considered professional and does not have market value.
I would also like to see Linda leverage on her present blog success and launch other businesses, as you know that time and chance happens to everyone.
2. INFORMATION NIGERIA. Niche: Nigerian News
There is little or no information about the owner or owners of this blog. The popularity however means that the owner or owners are working very hard. Founded in 2008 the blog ranks high for most Nigerian news keywords. With an alexa traffic rank of 6,100, over 550k facebook fans and 69,000 twitter followers, you have to notice them and give it to them. These guys are working very hard in the Nigerian blogosphere
3. YNAIJA. Niche: Nigerian News
Ynaija is more or less a full news web blog. Led by the very inspiring Chude Jideonwo, a lawyer by profession, the Y stands for Young and Naija for Nigerian. Chude’s goal is to inspire the Nigerian youth, hence the name, YOUNG & NIGERIAN or YNaija for short.
Professionally run, the YNaija blog has garnered a great following and remains on the front line in in the online Nigerian news publishing scene
4. BELLA NAIJA. Niche: Fashion, Entertainment
Uche Eze, bellanaija founder, seems to do her stuff with a lot of passion. As you can see from that pic, the way she passionately kissed her husband on their wedding day. According to cp-africa‘s description,
” … the blog has created its own signature blend of entertainment, feeding its active and engaged readers with its unique reporting style and diction”
She has featured on CNN and Oprah Winfrey show. No doubt her blog, bellanaija has become the “go-to” destination for what is cool and trending in the entertainment industry
5. MERCYJOHNSON. Niche: Entertainment News
There isn’t much information available about this blog ownership as well, but with a facebook like of over 118,000, you cannot but take note. Plus the site is updated regularly and ranks 180,000 on Alexa.
If you find the owners or managers, tell them we value their tenacity on the blogosphere and celebrate them. No doubt, they are seriously blogging
6. 360NOBS. Niche: Entertainment/Fiction
Noble Igwe, founder and owner of this blog, says he’s a trust fund kid who works to exercise his mind and body. He claims to be unruly but also calm. I just love the guy’s swags and I guess that’s what makes the blog unique
360Nobs uses funky swag in its stories and news and has managed to attract a phenomenal follower-ship. The facebook page alone has over 36,000 fans.
7. NOTJUSTOK: Niche: Music
Notjustok was founded by Demola Ogundele, who prefers to be called Mola OG. He and his other team members, Ovie and Lalaboiy, has successfully grown the notjustok blog into a very popular music brand. The site has become the number one online place for new music in Nigeria, dictating what’s hot and what’s not in the Nigerian music scene.
Its partnerships with top producers and musicians in the space has also helped her popularity and its signature brand name repeated at the start of songs has made its way and back from the web to the market. With more than 98,000 facebook fans, its fair to say that these guys have a great following and are to be taken seriously in the industry.
8. TECHLOY: Niche: Tech News
Techloy is a leading source for technology and startups news. Founded by Loy Okezie, techloy has bought its way into the hearts of today’s Internet companies, tomorrow’s innovations, emerging entertainment technologies and web culture with incisive insights and coverage of key African markets.
Its consistent coverage and scoops of all things ranging from the innovative to the controversial in the technology space has helped shaped what can often be a static niche into a vibrant arena of conversation and discourse.
You cannot dispute the fact that the blog is popular with alexa rank of 24,000
9. LADUNLIADI. Niche: Gossip
She calls herself happy chic, good for her. We would not have taken note of her blog because she is a copycat of Linda Ikeji, just that she is putting a lot of effort on it, so much, that she is gradually turning away from a copycat to competition. With an alexa traffic rank of 12,000 world wide, you will believe with me that this blogger is very serious. With a little touch on her blog and personal branding I can see great potential in her blogging activity.
10. LAILAIKEJI Niche: Gossip
This lady is another Linda Ikeji’s copycat, who, with determination to succeed has gradually become a competition. Like Ladun Liadi, she needs a little polishing on her personal branding and blog as well. We recognized her blog because she seems to be working so hard on it, so much that her blog traffic rank is below 50,000 as we speak.
Another thing I’ve found out is that this lady seems to be leveraging on Linda Ikeji’s name. She has remained silent on whether they are related or not. She needs to come out and tell us exactly who she is. In any case, we truly appreciate her tenacity on the blogosphere.
11. OGBONGE BLOG. Niche: Internet Marketing
Ogbongeblog has, with time, sold its way into the hearts of aspiring Nigerian internet opportunity seekers. The blog provides its content in a very sincere, open and “how to” style.
With more than 11,000 RSS subscribers, 1700 Google circle members, over 7,000 facebook fans, and hundreds of powerful articles with high comment rate, you have to acknowledge that Jide Ogunsanya, the blog founder, is not sleeping away.
With a little tweak on the blog design, Jide could cement his authority on this niche as his popularity has no questions, not with alexa rank of 36,000.
12. WRITERS INCHARGE. Niche: Article Writing
From time to time I come across Nigerians who are taking the battle to the front-line. By that I mean, they are not scared of competing on the international scene. While most Nigerian blogs target Nigerians, as you see from the writing and reporting style, some others are dominating the international scene with their content.
One such guy I recently stumbled on his blog is Bamidele Onibalusi. This guy has been featured on a couple of the most popular blogs like, johnchow.com, problogger and smartpassive income.
The blog in question is writersincharge.com. I loved this guy and his work so much that I had to become a subscriber. But beyond my liking him is the fact that his blog is very popular on the international scene and judging from the high comment rate of published articles on the blog, and the alexa rank of 35,000, you have to acknowledge he’s got a great following.
13. Olu Famos. Niche: Nigerian News
With an alexa rank of 13,000, facebook likes of 55,000 and 23,000 twitter fans, you’ll agree with me that give this journalist turned blogger time, he’ll go places with his blog.
I commend his tenacity, hence his appearance as an outstanding blogger
14. Don Caprio: Niche: Tech
Wale Adekile, otherwise known as Don Caprio, is a foremost tech and tricks blogger blogging from Osun State.
A self-confessed Tupac fan, a writer with a 5-year old unfinished novel (lol), Don is a diehard blogger who seems to know his onions in the tech blogging field.
15. Jackson Nwachukwu: Niche: Info Marketing
A contributor to tier 1 blogs ProBlogger, JohnChow, Search Engine Journal, etc. he understands how content marketing should be done.
However, Jacksons traffic has dropped by 120% in the last few months and he needs to work on his social connection.
16. JarusHub: Niche: Career Guide
Suraj Oyewale who operates the blog, JarusHub, is a great guy with a knack for career success. He provides professional career counseling and loads of career helps and his blog talks about career success.
Author of The Road to Victoria Island, Suraj is a popular resource person on Nigeria’s most visited website, Nairaland.
Given the fact that the career niche is not popular among Nigerian blogging space, yet Mr. Oyewale has gained a lot of following on it, it makes great sense to ascribe the title of an outstanding blogger to the blog owner. I do personally advise Jarushub to develop wider social connection
17. Oscarmini: Niche: Tech
His blog, Oscarmini.com is regularly up to date and filled with quality info. Coupled with the fact that I have come across him as a contributor to many blogs online.
With a alexa rank of 39,000, facebook fans of 4k and twitter following of 1,500, you know that with time Oscar’s tech blogging activity would be a big phenomenon.
18. MissPetiteNigeria: Niche: Gossip
