The cost of phones and laptops may drop but internet data is not dropping.
SWIFT Networks, operators of 4G Lite Internet Service Providers in Nigeria, as part of her commitment and in response to complaints from some customers about the speed at which they deplete their data allowance on the network suggest the following tips for reducing your broadband data internet usage cost.
These tips if followed could ensure that you do not incur avoidable charges that deplete your reserved data capacity on data networks.
1. Choose The Right Service Plan
Ensure that you select a service plan that is appropriate for your needs and lifestyle at the time of subscribing to any internet service.
2. Secure Your Modem
Reset the modem Wifi password as soon as you can and do not share your password with unauthorized people. It is also recommened that you change your Wifi password(s) periodically.
3. Power of Torrents
Torrents allow you to download movies swiftly but also upload it to other users of the service at the same time. Most ISP’s bills both your uploads and downloads, you will inadvertently be paying for this upload traffic to the other torrent service users. In many cases, the upload data is much higher than the download data and can have a 7 times data usage effect
4. Voice over IP (VoIP) Video and Webcams.
While Skyping, your video stream is billed as some ISP’s billing system is unable to distinguish it from other video traffic. It is advisable to turn it off if not required for your long duration calls.
5. High-Definition (HD) Videos.
It is recommend that you select a lower resolution video (videos which are not labeled as “HD”) from YouTube and other video sources if HD is not required. The fact is that the higher the quality of the video, the more the bandwidth that is required to transmit it.
6. Automatic Software Updates.
With most homes having several systems per user (laptop, tablets, smartphones and Apple devices mainly) all the updates can consume enormous bandwidth. Turn off automatic software updates if not required by you!
7. Independently monitor your bandwidth consumption.
We have software that enables you to monitor your bandwidth consumption and we encourage you to use it. You may also wish to use third-party software like “My Data manager” on each device connected to your modem to independently monitor your actual usage.
It is our hope that these tips help you to squeeze more out of your data allowance . Please use the comment box below to tell us if you have found any other ways to maximize internet usage.
